Giovanni Bellini, Venetian painter.

He began as an assistant in his father's workshop and continued painting into his mid-80s, gaining steadily in achievement and recognition. His first phase as an artist was strongly influenced by his formidable brother-in-law, the Paduan painter Andrea Mantegna, from whom he took a sculpturesque figure style; a sense for the potential eloquence of contour line; and occasional compositional ideas.

In spite of their modest size and conventional theme, these paintings invariably exhibit a remarkably fresh, inventive approach.

In addition to the "Virgin and Child", another recurring theme in Bellini's work is the "Pieta". This subject too has the Byzantine origin of the imago pietatis iconographical models used in Venetian art.

Venice, furthermore, was responsible for the introduction in the West of the so-called "Passion Portraits", whose function was to establish an empathetic dialogue between the dead Christ with the wounds of the martyr and the faithful contemplating Him.

The faithful, besides being moved by the sacrifice of Christ, draws consolation for his own pain through the observation of divine suffering.

Bellini and his workshop executed several variants of the subject Lamentation over the Dead Christ.

The church Santa Maria della Carita in Venice was reconstructed in the middle of the 15th century. Various chapels were erected between 1460 and 1464 by noble families.

Four chapels were decorated by altarpieces which are now associated with Giovanni Bellini: the St Sebastian Triptych in the St Sebastian chapel; the S. Lorenzo Triptych in the Chapel of Lorenzo Dolfin; the Nativity Triptych in the Chapel of Andrea da Molin; the Madonna Triptych in the Chapel of Giacomo Zorzi.

The four triptychs represent an important stage in the work of the youthful Giovanni Bellini.
