He had been influenced in his training by the work of Antonello da Messina, the first fifteenth century Italian artist to experiment with the new technique of oil painting.
Early in his career Catena imitated the works of the Bellini, the most important family of Venetian painters, and later Giorgione (with whom he may have shared a studio for a time).
