Питер Пауэл Рубенс (Рюбенс) (1577 - 1640), фламандский живописец.

Flemish artist.

His father, a Protestant lawyer, left Antwerp for Westphalia to escape persecution. There Peter Paul was born and baptized a Calvinist; then his parents separated.

Rubens worked in Italy from 1600 to 1608 before returning to Antwerp. Mother and son returned to Antwerp, where he was humanistically schooled, rebaptized a Roman Catholic, and soon became a page at a neighboring court. He also spent a considerable amount of time in Rome, where he painted altarpieces for the churches of Santa Croce di Gerusalemme (1602; now in Hopital du Petit-Paris, Grasse, France) and the Chiesa Nuova (1607; now in Musee de Peinture et Sculpture, Grenoble, France), his first widely acknowledged masterpieces. Rubens set up a studio along the lines of Italian painters' workshops, in which fully qualified artists executed paintings from the master's sketches. Rubens's personal contribution to the over 2,000 works produced by this studio varied considerably from work to work.

This painting is one of the largest to be found at the Prado Museum. Originally smaller, Rubens himself enlarged it - to the top and right - twenty years after he first painted it. He had done it for the government of his city, Antwerp; through the Spanish governor it reached Philip IV who comissioned Rubens to enlarge it during the painters second stay at Madrid's royal court. In the addition on the right Rubens included his own self-portrait -he is the horseman in purple who is turning to look at the spectator. It is one of his most spectacular and unrestrained works, albeit organised on a diagonal axis that acts as the backbone of the composition, running from the figure of the Child to the opposite corner.

Christ is crucified between two thieves.

"C'est vers la fin de sa vie que Rubens peint cette toile, pour le maitre autel de l'eglise des Capucins d'Anvers. Elle presente un Christ expirant, au visage torture par la douleur, le corps eclaire d'une lumiere blanche, qui contraste avec les tons plus fades des larrons et des soldats qui l'entourent. Cette lumiere semble rejaillir sur la Vierge, a droite, et sur Marie-Madeleine, agenouillee au pied de la croix, les mains maculees du sang du Christ, en eclairant leurs visages. Selon une technique que Rubens ameliore toujours davantage au cours de sa carriere, il utilise une touche chaude et fondue, grace a laquelle les teintes et la lumiere se confondent. Dans une composition ou les moindres details sont etudies, le Bon Larron, a gauche, penche sa tete vers le Christ, alors que le mauvais, a droite, s'en eloigne en renversant sa tete vers l'arriere. Le ciel nuageux, tres tourmente, participe a la desolation de la scene, et les collines rocheuses donnent un aspect sinistre au paysage."

In the painting the figure of the risen Christ holding a cross looks down upon the saint from the left side, while the Virgin on the right presses Her right breast with Her right hand, presumably to gift Augustine, on whom She gazes, with her milk. Augustine himself kneels between the Mother and Son looking up into the heavens with his arms crossed.
