Contrary to the traditional gesture, the Virgin's hand has the palm opened outwards, while the Child's hand that has been raised in benediction is placed within the triangle formed by the gold border hems of the Virgin's pallium and chiton. Worthy of note are the broad hems fringing the garments worn by the Virgin. In Byzantium icons of this type were styled "The Virgin with the ornamental fringe".
