Beginning of the Hours of the Virgin
композиция:
A three-storey architectural device is the setting for the Annunciation to the Virgin. Annunciation is depicted at the centre of the page, on the central storey. Behind Maria and Gabriel, a Phoenix rises from a flaming pyre (an allusion to the resurrection of Christ). Above, on the level of the balcony, God the Father, surrounded with putti, holds an open book. Christ's soul, portrayed as a naked infant within a golden aura, descends to Maria. The temptation of Adam and Eve by a female-headed serpent is portrayed on the bottom floor. On either side of Adam and Eve, the arms of Galeotto Pico della Mirandola (on the left) and Bianca Maria d'Este (on the right) are portrayed. The title and opening words of the Hours are written in display capitals on scrolls.
