БР и Младенец на троне с двумя ангелами {2224}
Virgin and Child enthroned with two angels
история:
In 1483 Leonardo and the de Predis brothers were commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in S. Francesco Grande, Milan.
In 1506, after much dispute, Leonardo agreed to paint a second version of the central panel.
A variant of the composition, earlier in style, is in the Louvre, in Paris, and may be the first version; this 'Virgin of the Rocks' is his second version.
The contract for this altarpiece has been preserved and specifies that the central panel was to be painted by Leonardo alone, and that there were to be two side panels (or shutters) showing angels singing and playing musical instruments.
St John the Baptist paying homage to Christ was a popular subject in Florentine art. St John could be mistaken for Christ here as he is without his characteristic camel skin and sits closer to the Virgin. Perhaps in order to avoid any confusion of identities, the cross and scroll have been added, although not by Leonardo. This painting shows some of the artistic inventions for which Leonardo was famous, such as the pyramidal compositions for figures of the Virgin and Child and a painting technique called 'sfumato', meaning 'hazy' or 'shadowy'. It is what gives the soft and mysterious air to many of his works. It was taken up by a number of painters influenced by him, for instance
