Purchased 16 January 1720 or 1721 by Nathaniel Noel (d. ~1753) for Edward Harley: inscribed ‘16 die January, A.D. 1720/21’, front flyleaf.

Sold as part of the Harley collection to Parliament by the Countess of Oxford, widow of Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, and their daughter, the Duchess of Portland, in 1753 and incorporated into the newly founded British Museum.

St Paul's appointment by Jesus Christ for missionary work at Jerusalem

Jesus Christ is appearing to St Paul in Jerusalem (in a dream) when he received the order to do missionary work in Rome whilst two Jewish people (~Rabbis) observe the situation from the back where they are placed under an arcade.

Martyrdom of SS Peter and Paul
композиция:
There are the Emperor Nero (37-68 A.D.) and Agrippa, Herod II (27-100 A.D.) along with a warrior under an arch and attending the martyrdoms of SS Peter and Paul which takes place in front of the palace. Next to them there is depicted the agony of St Peter who is tortured by two torturers standing on ledders and crucifying him with his head downward. The heads of the two hammering torturers had been wiped out in later times. A third torturer with a sword in his hands is beheading St Paul on the right whilst an angel ascending from heaven is receiving the souls of the two saints.
