Crucifixion with attendants
история:
This embroidery probably was one of twelve scenes from the life of Christ that, grouped around a central panel, hung across the front of an altar. The design was first drawn on the linen cloth, possibly by a professional artist. The embroiderer then worked the design in silk and metallic yarns, achieving subtle variations of tone and texture through the use of more than twenty colors of silk and a range of different stitches. The background, with raised scrollwork across the sky, was originally covered with gilded-silver yarns, an effect that paralleled the use of gold leaf on the background of medieval paintings.
